How did it all begin?
Last year, a good friend was visiting and decided to join us on a ski trip at the last minute. No gear, no plan. So on the morning of, we drove out to the resort hoping to sort it out on the spot. We walked into the rental shop and handed over $350 for a single day's worth of equipment: boots that pinched, skis that were clearly past their prime, and a helmet that smelled like someone else's bad day on the mountain. No alternatives, no flexibility; take it or leave it. On the chairlift, I looked around and realized half the mountain was in the exact same boat: tourists overpaying for gear that locals probably had collecting dust in their garages two miles down the road. We could've found something better the day before, back in our own city, if only there'd been a way to connect with those people. Gearify started as a simple idea on that ride up: what if the person with the perfect setup could share it with the person who needs it, at a fair price, with no middleman in sight?
Trust and Safety
Renting from a stranger takes a leap of faith, we get that. So here's exactly what's in place to protect everyone on Gearify.
Your money is always safe. Payments are processed through Stripe, one of the most trusted payment platforms in the world. Renters are never charged until a booking is confirmed, and funds are only released to the owner after the rental returns.
Deposits keep both sides honest. Owners can require a security deposit. It's held securely and returned automatically once the gear comes back in the same condition it left. No awkward conversations, no chasing people down.
Everyone is accountable. After every rental, both the renter and the owner leave a review. That two-sided history is visible to everyone on the platform, it's what keeps the community self-regulating.
We step in when it matters. Disputes happen. When they do, our team reviews the facts and makes a fair call. We don't just leave two people arguing in a chat thread. Clear policies mean there's no ambiguity about who's responsible for what before anything is ever handed over.
